Students, especially children, say that I am patient. I think this comes from the fact that I take a practical approach, with the progress of the student almost dictating how the tuition will evolve. As the student grows in confidence and ability, so do the challenges.

I take the approach of ‘bringing out’ the talent in the student instead of dictating to them.

Once the student is playing at a sufficiently proficient level, theory is introduced. This ensures that theory is not left behind.

Students are encouraged to do the Trinity College Grade exams, as it gives them a goal to work towards, as well as the confidence to play in front of others.

Ongoing concerts that are put on for parents, friends and family are also a part of the program. While this can be tense for the new students, it is also lots of fun for everyone involved.

By including music in more of your life, you can increase your ‘feel’ for the music. As music is largely about rhythm an pitch, by listening and feeling the music, you will grow your music abilities.

Attending classes once a week is simply not enough. Doing your ‘homework’ is also not the solution!

Get involved in as many music activities as possible, especially as a child. The school choir, ballet, dancing, singing in shows, etc. all serve to improve your music abilities.

So don’t be afraid to explore different music avenues and genres.

Getting your own instrument is also important, as this gives you a sense of commitment. Many students build up a special relationship with their instrument, as each instrument seems to have its own personality.

Reading of music is also important. By being able to read music, you open up the doors of endless possibilities.

In conclusion, I would say that the more you make music a part of your life, the more you will enjoy it, and the better you will be at it!

Learn how to play your favourite instrument with a passionate, experienced teacher

Whether you are a child or an adult and you want to learn how to play a musical instrument, Joy Ross is just the person you need.

You will not only learn how to play, but also learn all the theoretical components to pass exams, both local and international, if you want to.

She has been teaching adults and children for nearly three decades and is still as passionate about it since the day she started.

This passion has rubbed off onto her own children, who also actively involved in performing and teaching.

Her credentials include lecturing at colleges, teaching at schools, performing, winning numerous Eisteddfod gold medals and running classes from her home.

She uses a practical approach to learning the instrument so that you get a feel for the instrument before going on to the theory.

Theory is not neglected at all as can be seen by the fact that she successfully gets students through the international Trinity College Exams year after year.

Joy always had a love for music. She says that she started at the age of seven, but one may debate this and say that she started out of the cradle, having a very musical mother.

She also had a very strict teacher, which made her as good as she is today, but also resulted in may students dropping out. This explains her approach today, which rather allows the student to develop their musical talent and not the teacher beating it into them!

She is firm but nurturing, which explains why the children love her. She is practical, but does not neglect theory, which can be seen by the number of her students that have passed exams over the years.

This has made her into the sought after teacher that she is today.

Her love for music was such that even though her school did not have music as a subject, she did it as an extra subject and managed to graduate high school with music as one of her subjects.

This allowed her to study her Teacher’s Licentiate Diploma in Music at UCT and obtain her Higher Diploma in Education.

She is still active in music circles today; in choirs, accompanying soloists, writing music scores and, of course, teaching!

So, if you want to learn, or want you child to learn music give Joy a call today to find out how she can help you.
